SOME MILK AND CHEESE UPDATES
Full Description:
Joan Lamothe sold her 250 dairy cows in Falls Village more than a decade ago and moved to her grandfather's farm on Canaan Mountain with a small herd of white Sanaans, a breed that is to goats what Holsteins are to cows. Soon enough, Lamothe has been milking twice daily and making cheese three times a week.
Today, 30 regular customers drive three miles up the mountain from Route 7 to Rustling Wind Creamery from as far away as New Jersey to pay $11 to $20 for a pound of mild, slightly nutty and sweet cheese Lamothe has marked with her trademark blend of herbs.
In Southbury, Elizabeth Tapester has been caring for 40 Nubians and Oberhaslis for 14 years at Mountainbrook Farm, a certified raw dairy and has seen the same amount response as Lamothe.
The "goat herders" and local dairies in the Connecticut area are seeing this trend in dairy believing that people are getting smarter and know that the best milk and cheese come from local dairies where they care for and love their goats.
